Obama’s Empty July 4 Remarks
by Stephen Lendman
At a time of raging US direct and proxy wars without mercy, growing homeland repression, an unprecedented wealth disparity, a protracted Main Street Depression, and punishing neoliberal harshness harming millions, Obama mocked unspeakable human suffering, ignoring what demands addressing.
In his weekly address preceding July 4, he flippantly said he, wife and daughters would “hang out with family and friends,” enjoying “burgers and dogs…and watch(ing) the fireworks show.”
Celebratory ones nationwide hide US war theater horrors, industrial scale death and destruction, horrific human misery part of every day life, noncombatant civilians mostly harmed – slaughtered indiscriminately in cold blood, American imperial victims.
“We get celebrate our freedoms while…honor(ing) those who serve and sacrifice to make (them) possible,” Obama dismissively said.
Fact: Cherished freedoms are fast disappearing, the scourge of fascist tyranny replacing them.
Fact: Youths deceived into “serv(ing)” are “sacrifice(d)” on the alter of wealth, power and privilege.
Fact: No nation in world history caused more harm and misery to more people over a longer duration than America.
Fact: None more mock rule of law principles and democratic values while claiming to uphold them.
Fact: None more greatly threaten world peace and humanity’s survival.
Bipartisan neocons infesting Washington transformed the nation into a fascist police state – a monster waging wars of aggression against invented enemies, turning US streets into battlegrounds, benefitting the few at the expense of the many, and imprisoning thousands for political reasons.
“Have a great Fourth of July,” said Obama – how in a nation unfit and unsafe to live in.
Having grown up decades earlier when an inner city kid with nothing going for me but wonderful, loving parents teaching by example, able to breathe free, earn two degrees when higher education was affordable, have a rewarding small business career, then a second pro bono one in “retirement,” writing and doing media work – truth-telling when it’s most needed, I fear for today’s youths.
Most have nothing to look forward to, victims of America’s maniacal quest for world dominance – no cause for celebration on July 4 or any other day.
