The NYT Wants Trump Ousted from Office

by Stephen Lendman ( – Home – Stephen Lendman)

The deplorable NYT is at war with Trump, ongoing since mid-2015, continuing relentlessly.

It’s waging a campaign to oust him from office, despite no evidence of abuse of power, other than naked aggression in multiple theaters, a high crime no US president was ever held accountable for.

A new Times tactic questions his mental fitness to serve as president, promoting legislation introduced by 28 undemocratic Democrats, calling for evaluating his medical and emotional fitness, saying:

If a panel of doctors, including psychiatrists, “found (him) unfit to govern and the vice president agreed, (Pence) would become acting president.” House and Senate members make that determination, not medical professionals and the vice president.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, nearly half of US presidents from 1789 to 1974 had psychiatric disorders, over a fourth meeting the criteria while in office.

Emotional disorders included depression, anxiety ranging from social phobia to generalized anxiety disorder, bipolarity, manic thinking, alcoholism, sleep apnea associated with declining cognitive functioning, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Lincoln was elected president despite suffering from lifelong depression. Though unfairly called America’s greatest leader, should he have been disqualified from running for office?

Numerous US presidents experienced serious illness in office, adversely affecting their ability to govern – including George Washington, John Adams (from manic depression), Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Chester Arthur, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Jack Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan,

Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Kennedy, William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, James Garfield, William McKinley, and Warren Harding died in office.

Trump is accused of having a narcissistic personality disorder. Narcissism likely applies to most seekers of high office.

According to Dr. Nassir Ghaemi, head of Mood Disorders at Tufts Medical Center, leaders with some mental illnesses perform better in times of crisis. They may be more able to deal with upheaval and uncertainty, he believes.

Mental disorders can also negatively affect behavior. According to Dr. Henry Murray, former Harvard Psychological Clinic head, Hitler was pathologically “counteractive…motivated by resentment and revenge in response to prior narcissistic wounding and profound feelings of inferiority.”

Maybe so, though Murray and others evaluating his emotional state never examined him when alive – so their evaluation is at least partly guesswork.

At the same time, anyone ravenously seeking power domestically and by pursuing conquests abroad like Hitler and modern-day US leaders likely rages for dominance by whatever means it takes to achieve it.

War was the strategy of choice in Nazi Germany and today by US leaders. Perhaps madness lets them feel comfortable about mass slaughter and destruction.

Normal people can’t imagine pursuing it. Hitler’s dominating father may have led to what Nietzsche called an exceptional “will to power” later in life.

US presidential aspirants are asked to disclose their medical histories. Their past and present emotional health isn’t considered.

Do narcissism, anxiety and/or other emotional disorders help or hinder performance in a high-stress job like head of state?

US presidents from the republic’s inception suffered from physical and emotional illnesses. Should they have been removed from office for being ill?

Abuse of power is a valid reason. Article 2, Section 4 of the Constitution states “(t)he President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Other than war crimes Trump critics never mention, he’s constitutionally innocent of impeachable crimes – despite his deplorable agenda.
