Trump and the Saudis Falsely Accused Iran of Involvement in a Missile from Yemen Fired at the Kingdom

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)

The joint accusation was a bald-faced lie, accusers knowing they turned truth on its head.

Trump finds new ways of disgracing himself. “A shot was just taken by Iran, in my opinion, at Saudi Arabia,” he roared, adding:

“You know about that, right? You saw the missile that went out? And our system knocked the missile out of the air.”

Saudi spokesman Turki bin Saleh Maliki said Houthis launched the missile from Yemen, claiming the Kingdom’s missile defense destroyed it. Whether true or not isn’t known.

Unidentified and unverified YouTube videos in the aftermath of the incident showed people running running from the scene, smoke rising and sirens heard after loud explosions.

If this accurately explains what happened at King Khalid International Airport north of Riyadh, it suggests the missile detonated on impact, not destroyed flight as the Saudis claimed.

Only one previous instance of a Houthi missile fired at Saudi territory struck a target without being intercepted.

Riyadh accused Iran of supplying Houthi fighters with longer-range missiles. It’s almost impossible with a tight land, sea and air blockade imposed on Yemen.

Suspected weapons shipments would be easily intercepted and confiscated. Accusations by Trump and Riyadh are spurious.

It’s doubtful Saudis are capable of successfully intercepting inflight missiles with consistent accuracy, if at all. The effectiveness of Israel’s so-called missile defense system is way overblown.

Iran debunked the phony accusation by Trump and Riyadh, Islamic Revolution Guards Corp (IRGC) commander General Mohammad Ali Jafari, saying:

“Trump’s claims about providing Yemen with missiles by the Islamic Republic of Iran are baseless,” adding:”

Iran has no way of shipping weapons to Houthi fighters. The US/Riyadh blockade prevents weapons and most everything else from getting in.

Houthis increased the range of their missiles, spokesman Col. Aziz Rashed, saying:

“Our Yemeni forces succeeded in launching a missile, a Borkan H2 long distance missile, at King Khalid International Airport in northeastern Riyadh, which was in response to the massacres committed by the US-Saudi coalition in Yemen.”

He blasted Trump’s accusation, saying he “made many wrong, baseless and false remarks and leveled many accusations against Iran and this is one of those accusations.”

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami also rejected false accusations by Trump and Rihadh, saying:

“The enemy uses every opportunity to make allegations against Iran and we definitely reject this issue.”

Commenting on Lebanese PM Hariri’s resignation, he called him a Saudi stooge, stepping down on orders from Riyadh and Israel, aimed at creating instability in Lebanon, among other reasons.
