Israel to Establish Military Control Over East Jerusalem Areas?
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
Israel already has de facto militarized control over the Occupied Territories, including East Jerusalem and Gaza.
Its forces invade and terror-bomb the Strip at their discretion, attacking fisherman at sea the same way, terrorizing its two million residents – operating the same way throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Its High Court earlier ruled Israel controls Palestinian territories under “belligerent occupation.”
Israeli Orwellian language considers them “disputed territories.” In 1980, the Knesset passed the Jerusalem Law, considered Basic Law in lieu of a constitution, declaring Jerusalem the “complete and united” exclusive capital of Israel.
Its lawmakers defied international law, along with Security Council Res. 476, declaring “all legislative and administrative measures and actions taken by Israel, the occupying Power, which purport to alter the character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal validity and constitute a flagrant (Fourth Geneva) violation.”
SC Res. 478 called Israel’s action regarding Jerusalem “null and void,” requiring its action be rescinded forthwith.
Nations may not enacted laws in violation of international ones, according to Article 27 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.
Treaties reflect international law in different form. National laws contravening them are illegal.
According to Haaretz and Turkey’s Anadolu (news) Agency, an unnamed Israeli defense official said the IDF central command and “headquarters of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) are reviewing the possibility of assuming responsibility for security in (East Jerusalem’s) Shuafat refugee camp and Kafr Aqab” district.
They’re under the city’s jurisdiction, separated by the Apartheid Wall. Israel may deploy its Samaria Brigade to control these Palestinian areas together with COGAT – on the phony pretext of curbing violence it instigates, Palestinians wrongfully blamed.
Half or more of Shoafat and Kafr Aqab residents have Israeli ID cards and residency status – around 140,000 people, separated from Jerusalem, provided few public services, Israel’s way of pressuring them to leave to make way for exclusive Jewish development.
Joint (Arab) List MK Ayman Odeh called the move a scheme to “uproot” its residents “from Jerusalem and to shatter East Jerusalem into small entities comprised of separate villages and neighborhoods,” exacerbating already dire conditions – part of a broader plan to entirely Judaize the city, Israel’s longterm aim.
Trump breached international law by declaring Jerusalem Israel’s capital, intending to move Washington’s embassy there.
Palestinians demand East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state, a core issue its leadership is firm on.
