Trump Regime Wants Venezuela Suspended from OAS

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)

Headquartered in Washington, the Organization of American States (OAS) is a longtime US imperial tool – wanting its 35 member states serving its interests.

Established to promote hemispheric “democracy for peace, security and development,” most member states defile them – notably the US at home and abroad globally.

Former leaders included an array of US-supported tinpot tyrants, notably father and son Duvalier in Haiti, fascist Rios Montt in Guatemala, Pinochet in Chile, numerous Mexican despots, Fujimori and others like him in Peru, Somoza in Nicaragua, Batista in Cuba, along with death squad rulers in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Honduras, El Salvador and elsewhere in the region.

Far-right regimes in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and in other OAS countries consider rule of law principles and democratic values anathema, force-feeding neoliberal harshness on their people, serving privileged interests exclusively, the way Washington operates.

The Trump regime called on OAS member states to suspend Venezuelan membership in the organization – part of longstanding US political, propaganda, and economic war on the country, wanting fascist tyranny replacing Bolivarian social democracy.

Bolivian President Evo Morales tweeted the following:

“We condemn the interventionist intention of the US Vice President Mike Pence who was defeated in his coup plan against Venezuela, and announced that he will ask the OAS assembly for the suspension of the sister nation,” adding:

Washington wants the organization used as a “repressive stick” against Venezuelan sovereignty. Suspension requires two-thirds majority member state support.

On Tuesday, the OAS passed a resolution, calling for an extraordinary assembly to vote on suspending Venezuela.

Its Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza slammed the vote, saying “(t)hose that have supported this are supporting the possibility of a military intervention in Venezuela. Let that be on your conscious.”

Last year, president Nicolas Maduro began a two-year process to withdraw from the OAS – in response to secretary general Luis Almagro’s failed attempt to achieve super-majority support for suspending Venezuela.

Days earlier, Maduro said the just concluded “OAS General Assembly (is the last one) where the Venezuelan foreign minister (will) participate,” adding:

“We criticize the OAS and we withdraw” – for its complicity with Washington’s smear campaign against the Bolivarian Republic.
