Undemocratic Dems for Regime Change in Venezuela by Coup d’Etat
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
America’s long history of toppling independent governments unwilling to subordinate their sovereignty to US interests raised its ugly head again in Venezuela – wanting fascist tyranny replacing social democracy, the hemisphere’s best.
The country is in crisis, its people suffering hugely, largely because of US imposed, flagrantly illegal, crippling sanctions, devastating its economy.
Most undemocratic Dems support Trump’s coup d’etat attempt, flagrantly violating international and constitutional law – what designating right-wing extremist Juan Guaido interim (puppet) president is all about, his illegitimacy indisputable.
Last week, Speaker Pelosi tweeted: “America stands by the people of #Venezuela as they rise up against authoritarian rule and demand respect for human rights and democracy” – notions she and the vast majority of Washington’s ruling class abhor.
Senate Dem whip Dick Durbin pledged support for regime change in Venezuela by coup d’etat, disgracefully calling it a “peaceful transition to…legitimate” rule.
Dem chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Eliot Engel strongly supports the coup attempt, calling it democracy in action against “Nicolas Maduro’s authoritarian rule. The most fundamental characteristic of any democracy is allowing one’s citizens to choose their own leaders, and the Venezuelan people deserve the right to do just this” – ignoring the political reality in the country, ongoing disruptive events orchestrated by the Trump regime and CIA.
Engel and most others in Washington ignore Venezuela’s democratic process, the hemisphere’s best, Maduro elected and reelected Venezuelan president, what democracy in action is all about, not tolerated by Republicans and Dems at home and abroad.
House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff turned truth on its head, calling Maduro’s democratic election “dictatorial rule, adding (usurper) Guaido is “the rightful leader of Venezuela.”
Self-styled progressive in name only, longstanding conman throughout his political career, largely supporting the agenda of undemocratic Dems Bernie Sanders opposes Maduro’s democratic election and legitimacy as Venezuela’s president.
Ignoring reality, he called last May’s presidential election “fraudulent,” according to “many observers” – only regime change supporters, no others, not international monitors calling the election scrupulously open, free, and fair, what’s indisputably true about all Venezuelan elections.
Dem presidential aspirants are mixed on Trump’s coup attempt. None support military intervention to topple Maduro. Most recognize designated puppet Guaido as interim president to their shame.
Meredith Kelly denounced Maduro, supporting Trump’s coup to remove him short of military intervention.
Kirsten Gillibrand supports usurper Guaido, illegal sanctions harming ordinary Venezuelans most, and extrajudicial new elections until a candidate the US supports wins.
Sherrod Brown called for “work(ing) with our allies and use of economic, political and diplomatic leverage to help bring about free and fair elections” – ignoring Maduro’s legitimate reelection.
Self-styled progressive in name only Elizabeth Warren called for new elections so Venezuelans can “live without fear of violence from their own government” – made in the USA, she failed to explain.
Amy Klobucher called for “restoring democracy” in Venezuela,” opposing Maduro’s legitimacy.
Tulsi Gabbard stands on the right side of history on this issue, tweeting: “The United States needs to stay out of Venezuela. Let the Venezuelan people determine their future. We don’t want other countries to choose our leaders―so we have to stop trying to choose theirs.”
By video message, she said US “(m)ilitary invention and regime change around the world has brought suffering to millions of people…undermin(ing) our national security, not strengthening it.
“The United States should not be in the business of intervening” in the internal affairs of any countries, and “certainly should not be threatening military actions” against sovereign states anywhere, what’s repeated time and again.
Cory Booker expressed concern about what’s going on, saying it’s “alarming to me on many levels,” with no elaboration.
Other Dem presidential aspirants have been silent so far on Trump’s coup attempt. Failure to denounce it is complicit with what’s going on.
Britain’s Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn opposes Trump’s coup attempt, saying “(t)he future of Venezuela is a matter for Venezuelans,” not a foreign power trying to impose its will on a sovereign state.
On Friday, Maduro said he “stand(s) firm in defense of the people’s sovereignty, of the constitution and the rights of Venezuela.”
Days earlier, CNN, the most distrusted name in news, gave two self-proclaimed Venezuelan army defectors an on-air platform to oppose Maduro, one of them saying:
“As Venezuelan soldiers, we are making a request to the US to support us, in logistical terms, with communication, with weapons, so we can realize Venezuelan freedom (sic).”
The pair were likely CIA props, wearing uniforms unused by Venezuelan soldiers since 2008, living abroad. RT explained that they’re “not in the army, not defectors and don’t live in Venezuela.”
CNN is complicit in supporting the Trump regime’s coup d’etat attempt. So is virtually the entire US-led Western media establishment to its disgrace – operating as mouthpieces for wealth, power and privilege, opposing peace, equity, justice, and democracy the way it’s supposed to be.
