US Media Unanimously Against Venezuela’s Social Democracy
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
Money-controlled one-party rule with two extremist right wings reflects America’s deplorable state, a democracy in name only, never the real thing, a notion it deplores and wants eliminated wherever it exists.
The same goes for its major media, a collective mouthpiece for powerful interests, mocking what journalism the way it should be is all about, sticking to the official narrative on major issues, suppressing what’s most important to report.
It’s worst of all on geopolitical issues, especially when the US goes to war or otherwise targets sovereign independent nations for regime change — serving as collective imperial press agent, a mouthpiece for naked aggression, color revolutions, and old-fashioned coups, supporting what demands denunciation.
Throughout Bolivarian Republic history since established by Hugo Chavez in February 1999, major media reporting on the country has been some of the most abysmal in memory, especially since Trump regime hardliners began waging war on the country by other means.
Media watchdog FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting) has a documented record of fourth estate anti-Venezuela bias. Virtually all establishment media support the Trump regime’s aim to eliminate Bolivarian social democracy by toppling President Nicolas Maduro and his government.
They’re for replacing him with US designated puppet Guaido, a political nobody, elected by no one as head of state, a figure 80% of Venezuelans knew nothing about until he self-declared himself interim president in January, a flagrant constitutional violation.
Weeks earlier, FAIR said the following:
A survey it conducted “of US opinion journalism on Venezuela found no voices in elite corporate media that opposed regime change in that country,” adding:
“Over a three-month period (from mid-January to mid-April 2019), zero opinion pieces in the New York Times and Washington Post took an anti–regime change or pro-Maduro/Chavista position.”
“Not a single commentator on the big three Sunday morning talk shows or PBS NewsHour came out against President Nicolas Maduro stepping down from the Venezuelan government.”
Scores of articles, opinion pieces, and video commentaries either support regime change or failed to oppose unlawful actions to unseat Maduro.
No one connected to US major media supports his legitimacy as Venezuelan president, democratically elected and reelection.
Independent international monitors consistently judge Venezuela’s electoral process scrupulously open, free, and fair. Jimmy Carter earlier called it “the best in the world” — polar opposite America’s money-controlled system, ordinary people having no say over how they’re governed.
US democracy in name only is fake. Venezuelans have the real thing, why Republicans and undemocratic Dems want its government toppled, replaced by US-controlled fascist tyranny, along with gaining control over its vast oil reserves, the world’s largest, a prize Washington covets.
The NYT, neocon/CIA-connected Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, US broadcast media, PBS, NPR, and an array of extremist right-wing think tanks are especially hostile to what Bolivarian social democracy is all about.
FAIR called US corporate news coverage of Venezuela (including by state/corporate controlled public radio and broadcasting) “a full-scale marketing campaign for regime change,” adding:
Hostility toward Maduro by “the most influential US media” is virtually unanimous — ignoring his democratic legitimacy and majority support in the country.
FAIR earlier reported about “corporate media’s willful erasure of vast improvements to Venezuelan life under Chavismo, particularly for the oppressed poor, black, indigenous and mestizo populations.”
There’s virtually no establishment media discussion about Trump’s lawless actions, his coup d’etat attempt, his war on Venezuela by other means, his aim to transform the country into a US vassal state, wanting its vast energy resources handed to Big Oil, its people exploited and immiserated.
Nor is anything said about Guaido’s illegitimacy, his Trump regime controlled campaign against Venezuela’s democratically elected government, seeking to topple it forcefully.
According to Republicans, Dems and establishment media, “dictators” are democratically elected leaders the US opposes for not subordinating the sovereign rights of their nations to Washington’s interests.
FAIR summed up its findings as follows, saying:
“That elite media didn’t find a single person to vouch for Maduro or Chavismo, and that almost all the opinions explicitly or implicitly expressed support for the ouster of Venezuela’s (democratically) elected president, demonstrates a firm editorial line, eerily obedient to the US government’s regime change policy” — ignoring its flagrant breach of international, constitutional, and US statute laws.
