The NYT Pushes the Trump Impeachment Scam
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
In 1974, the Times pushed relentlessly against Richard Nixon, cooked up Watergate forcing his resignation on trumped up charges.
He threatened entrenched military/industrial/security and other interests, why he was marked for removal.
The Times never forgave Trump for defeating media darling Hillary, virtually serving as her press agent throughout the 2016 campaign, abandoning any pretext of journalistic integrity — disavowed long ago by the self-styled newspaper of record in its own mind.
Throughout his tenure, the Times vilified Trump, largely for the wrong reasons, ignoring the most important right ones — notably wars of aggression he escalated and ones by other means on Iran and Venezuela, his lawless actions supported by the broadsheet.
The Times endorsed a Dem-announced impeachment inquiry of Trump (and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani) for allegedly asking Ukrainian President Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter on corruption related issues, and allegedly delaying military aid as a bargaining chip.
Basing an impeachment hearing on what’s common practice in Washington by both right wings of the one-party state is the latest anti-Trump scam — launched because the Russiagate witch hunt hoax failed.
Note: I deplore Trump for his geopolitical lawlessness, breaking virtually every positive promise made, elevating serial lying by the executive to an unprecedented level, among other reasons.
I support holding him accountable for legitimate reasons, key ones, not trumped up rubbish like Russiagate and now Ukrainegate.
Slamming Trump for lack of transparency, the Times ignored how Obama stifled free-flowing House House information, his unprecedented war on whistleblowers.
Lacking transparency and accountability, his regime classified a record amount of material to conceal what’s vital for everyone to know.
He monitored journalists, accessed their phone records, read their emails, even tracked their personal movements.
Obsessed with secrecy, he waged war on journalism the way it should be. The late Helen Thomas (1920 – 2013) called his press-controlling efforts unprecedented.
Malign practices continue under Trump, the Times turning a blind eye to how his predecessor operated.
The Times: “(W)hen reports surfaced (about Trump and Giuliani) pushing Ukrainian officials to pursue a corruption investigation of…Joe Biden…there was no mass outrage, no collective gasp of horror,” adding:
A complaint by an alleged whistleblower, “filed with the (intelligence community) inspector general…accus(ed) Trump of” of this action, along with not releasing military aid to Ukraine — that never should have been approved ever for its coup d’etat regime.
All of the above smacks of tempest in a teapot deception, much ado over nothing, going after Trump for the wrong reasons, ignoring key right ones.
The Times: “This episode of extreme politicking by Mr. Trump seems to go straight to questions of national security…”
Fact: Ukraine is a fascist police state, its ruling authorities installed by the US.
US military aid goes for waging war on its own people, nationwide repression of regime opponents, millions pocketed by corrupt officials.
The Times relished Speaker Pelosi’s announcement, initiating an impeachment inquiry. Saying Trump “must be held accountable,” ignored high crimes of state committed by both wings of the US war party — cheerled by the Times and other establishment media.
The Times: “There will be no more push and pull among (Dems) about whether to hold an official impeachment inquiry. (T)he trigger has been pulled, the Rubicon crossed, the die cast,” adding:
“After months — years even — of watching Mr. Trump behave as though he answered to no one, many lawmakers seemed almost relieved that the showdown had arrived.”
“Now that it has, lawmakers of both parties must proceed with care. Rarely have the stakes been so high.”
Fact: Washington’s criminal class is bipartisan. Accountability if enforced would leave few left standing in the nation’s capital, profiles in courage even rarer, given a cesspool of malign actions infesting the city and beltway.
The vast majority of US elected officials and bureaucrats support imperial wars of aggression, other hostile actions, and monied interests exclusively over the general welfare.
They abhor peace, equity, justice, the rule of law and other democratic values they tolerate nowhere, especially not domestically.
They consider beneficial social change a threat to national security. Democracy in America is for its privileged few exclusively, ordinary people exploited to serve them — endless hot wars and by other means waged for greater wealth and power.
Dems and Republicans are largely interchangeable. Not a dime’s worth of difference separates them on issues mattering most.
Initiating an impeachment hearing on Trump is all about Dems seeking a political advantage in 2020 presidential and congressional elections.
Ukrainegate follows the failed Russiagate witch hunt. It’s unlikely to fare better, more likely to benefit Trump than be detrimental to his reelection campaign.
