Temporary Respite for Terrorized Gazans
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
While it lasts, terrorized and traumatized Gazans welcomed a halt in Israeli terror-bombing and shelling.
Reportedly they poured into streets expressing relief when it ended for now overnight — after 11 days of round-the-clock Netanyahu regime ordered state terror on the Strip’s two million people.
The Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network said the following:
“With the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza…one lesson is extremely clear.”
“Palestinian resistance lives.”
“Palestinian resistance thrives.”
“Palestinian resistance unites, and Palestinian resistance wins.”
“The resistance (in all forms) is deeply rooted in the Palestinian people inside and outside Palestine…”
It’s “a legitimate resistance fighting colonialism, occupation, settler colonialism (and) Zionist racism, backed by the full weight of US imperialism and its allies…”
Palestinian resistance” reflects the liberating struggle of its people.
It’s also “the front line of the defense of humanity against imperialism and colonial domination.”
Dubious ceasefire “does not end the ongoing Nakba of the Palestinian people (against) Zionist settler colonialism for the past 73 years.”
“At this moment, it is more critical than ever to support Palestinian steadfastness, resistance and revolutionary struggle with global solidarity and action.”
“The heroic struggle of Palestinians (throughout the Territories) to defend their homes and land…from rampaging hordes of colonial settler gangs backed by Israeli military and police force, mobilized the Palestinian people as a whole, inside and outside Palestine.”
Millions worldwide support their liberating struggle from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.
For 11 days, Israel’s war machine killed or wounded thousands of Palestinians, including women, children and infants.
Without US/Western support, apartheid Israel’s colonial project would have weakened and perhaps ended long ago.
On Thursday, director of the Al-Haq human rights group Shawan Jabarin denounced “the international community’s lack of political will to hold Israel to an account (for) crimes against the Palestinian people…”
“(N)o peace (exists) without justice, and no justice without accountability,” he stressed.
Israel, its US/Western and partnered enablers bear full responsibility for denial of Palestinian rights for generations.
Other human rights groups supportive of Palestinian rights condemned 11 days of Israeli aggression.
On Thursday, an unnamed Biden regime official’s claim that the US will play a leading role in rebuilding Gaza was head-fake deception.
One-sided US/Western support for Israel and indifference toward Palestinians is longstanding policy of their ruling regimes.
Nothing remotely suggests a change of policy ahead.
Gazans and all Palestinians are largely on their own, help provided them from a few non-Western countries alone, Iran among them.
Days earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif slammed the Biden regime’s support for Israeli aggression, including by “block(ing) the mildest possible (Security Council) statement.”
On Thursday, he said the following on the “Question of Palestine” in addressing the UN General Assembly:
“The Security Council – despite the continued mass dispossession, occupation, and persecution of the Palestinian people by the Israeli regime – remains obstructed by the US from upholding its Charter duties and shouldering its responsibility to stop violation of United Nations resolutions,” adding:
“It is evident that the only path to peace in Palestine is the holding of a referendum among all residents of Palestine, Jews, Christians and Muslims, including displaced Palestinians and refugees.”
Israel, of course, bans the notion of democracy in historic Palestine and its own territory — with full US/Western support.
They prohibit governance of, by, and for everyone equitably according to the rule of law domestically and everywhere else.
Zarif thanked participating nations for addressing Israeli atrocities in Gaza and throughout the Occupied Territories.
He stressed how “Palestinians have been deprived of their lands, properties and businesses while being forcibly evicted from their homes and subjected to violence, terror, and intimidation.”
“The Israeli regime…has totally negated any right of the Palestinians to self-determination…”
“(I)t has taken unprecedented measures and provocations to accelerate Judaizing Al-Quds Al-Sharif and altering its demographic composition through the elimination of Palestinian Christians and Muslims in the Holy City.”
For 11 days, “Israeli forces bombarded the Gaza Strip, the world’s biggest open-air prison, and through waging a disproportionate war by resorting to advanced weaponry in the most cruel and brutal manner have massacred hundreds of Palestinians and injured thousands of civilians.”
Despite no ambiguity about about its crimes of war, against humanity, and slow-motion genocide against the Palestinian people, its criminal leadership, supportive Knesset members, and military commanders remain unaccountable for Nuremberg-level criminality.
Because of US/Western obstruction of Security Council condemnation of Israeli aggression, the “General Assembly, as the collective conscience of the international community, has a vital responsibility to condemn Israel’s military aggression and its ethnic cleansing and adopt necessary measures to hold Israel accountable for its war crimes and crimes against humanity,” Zarif stressed.
Under international law, Palestinians throughout the Territories “are fully entitled to defend themselves and to defy the tyrannical tactics of this racist apartheid regime.”
Few diplomats speak as candidly, courageously and truthfully as Zarif on historic Palestine and other important international issues.
Too few nations support peace, equity and justice according to the rule of law — none in the West, apartheid Israel, and nations supporting their criminality.
